Natural Hazard Triggering Technological Accidents (NaTech)

NaTech events occur when natural hazards trigger technological accidents involving hazardous materials, industrial facilities, critical infrastructure, transportation systems, or energy networks.

Examples include:

  • Flooding of chemical facilities;

  • Earthquake-induced hazardous material releases;

  • Wildfire impacts on industrial sites;

  • Storm damage to energy infrastructure;

  • Tsunami impacts on ports and industrial facilities.

NaTech events often generate cascading consequences affecting public health, the environment, critical infrastructure, and emergency response operations.

Effective NaTech risk management requires integration of natural hazard assessments and industrial risk management approaches.
