Prevention, Preparedness and Response to natural and man-made Disasters

UfM Regional Civil Protection and Disaster Risk Management Platform

The UfM Regional Civil Protection and Disaster Risk Management Platform serves as a collaborative knowledge-sharing, preparedness, and cooperation environment supporting civil protection authorities, disaster risk management practitioners, emergency services, technical agencies, researchers, and regional stakeholders across the Euro-Mediterranean region.

The platform aims to strengthen disaster resilience, preparedness, interoperability, operational coordination, and knowledge exchange among countries facing increasingly complex and interconnected natural and man-made risks.

The Mediterranean and Middle East regions are exposed to a wide range of hazards, including floods, flash floods, wildfires, droughts, earthquakes, industrial accidents, marine pollution incidents, extreme weather events, and cascading disasters affecting populations, infrastructure, and the environment.

Climate change, urbanisation, demographic growth, environmental degradation, and technological developments are further increasing the frequency, intensity, and complexity of many disaster scenarios.

The platform provides access to technical resources, training materials, best practices, lessons learned, operational guidance, geospatial information, preparedness tools, and regional cooperation initiatives supporting disaster risk reduction and civil protection activities.

Particular emphasis is placed on promoting regional cooperation, interoperability, innovation, and the use of advanced technologies such as Earth Observation, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Artificial Intelligence, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), environmental monitoring systems, modelling tools, and digital preparedness platforms.

Forest fires pose a significant threat to Mediterranean ecosystems, particularly during the hot and dry summer months. These fires can spread rapidly, endangering lives, destroying property, and devastating natural habitats.

Flash floods are sudden, intense events that can occur with little warning, often as a result of heavy rainfall or rapid snowmelt. In the Mediterranean region, these floods can cause severe damage to infrastructure and pose serious risks to human safety.
More info
Natech risks, short for natural-hazard triggered technological risks, refer to the risks that arise when natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, or storms cause technological accidents, leading to the release of hazardous substances, disruptions in critical infrastructure, or other significant technological failures.
